It's a simple mod that takes care of that problem for you by letting you set a time span during which they are always on, even if they burned all their fuel. You don't have to add any fuel at all, and it will work for you at any time of day or night.
The way it works is simple. You just need to open the config file and find the section called “AffectedFireplaceSources” to add to the list of objects affected by the mod. You can also configure the timer and the ability to add fuel and the duration it burns.
